Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to open blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. It is one of the most common cardiac interventions performed worldwide.
Before the Procedure
Your cardiologist will conduct a thorough evaluation including blood tests, ECG, and sometimes a coronary angiography. You may be asked to stop certain medications and fast for 6-8 hours before the procedure.
During the Procedure
A thin catheter with a tiny balloon at its tip is inserted through the wrist or groin artery and guided to the blocked coronary artery. The balloon is inflated to compress the plaque against the artery walls. In most cases, a stent (a small mesh tube) is placed to keep the artery open.
After the Procedure
Most patients can go home within 24-48 hours. Recovery is typically quick, with most people returning to normal activities within a week. You will be prescribed blood-thinning medications that must be taken as directed.
