Can You Have a Heart Attack and Have a Normal ECG?

Can You Have a Heart Attack and Have a Normal ECG? A normal ECG (electrocardiogram) does not necessarily mean that your heart is healthy or that you are free from a heart attack. According to the Times of India article, a person can experience a heart attack even when the initial ECG appears normal. The Times of India An ECG records the heart’s electrical activity for a few seconds. If the test is conducted early, the changes caused by reduced blood flow may not yet be visible. Certain types of heart attacks, such as Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI), may also produce subtle or no obvious ECG abnormalities. The location of a blockage and pre-existing heart conditions can further complicate detection. Symptoms should never be ignored simply because an ECG is normal. Warning signs include chest pain or tightness, pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck or back, breathlessness, cold sweats, nausea, dizziness and unusual fatigue. Women, older adults and people with diabetes may experience less typical symptoms. Doctors may recommend high-sensitivity troponin blood tests, repeat ECGs and additional imaging to identify heart muscle damage and establish a diagnosis. The key takeaway: A normal ECG is reassuring, but it cannot independently rule out a heart attack. Diagnosis requires considering symptoms, medical history, ECG findings and blood test results together. If you experience persistent chest pain or other signs of a heart attack, seek emergency medical attention immediately, even if your ECG appears normal. Early diagnosis and treatment can save lives.
