Cholesterol is a waxy substance found in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to build healthy cells, having high levels of the wrong type of cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease.
The Two Types of Cholesterol
HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein) — The Good Cholesterol: HDL cholesterol acts like a scavenger, carrying LDL cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver, where it is broken down and passed from the body.
LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein) — The Bad Cholesterol: LDL cholesterol contributes to fatty buildups in arteries (atherosclerosis), which narrows the arteries and increases the risk for heart attack, stroke, and peripheral artery disease.
